In my Pantry: September 2016

I wanted to create a monthly series of products I am loving in my kitchen (pantry, freezer, fridge). I am a vegan product junkie and love to try new things that catch my eye in all the healthy grocery stores I frequent in LA. While 90% of the food I eat is purchased at the farmer's markets (fruits, vegetables, greens) I sometimes like to boost my smoothies with protein powders, superfoods and other healthy-ish snacks. So here are some of the products I am loving this month!

Daily Harvest

If you are always on the go and don't have time to think about making a morning smoothie that is healthy, filling and nutritionally dense, then Daily Harvest is for you. This smoothie subscription service will deliver a week's worth of pre-packed frozen smoothies to your door. You choose the flavor combinations and add a liquid of choice (almond milk, coconut water, etc.) and blend it in your Vitamix. The smoothies are delivered in recyclable cups that you can drink your smoothie from and then toss. I think that the flavors are all varied and delicious and for someone who needs the convenience of a pre-packed smoothie, this is a great option as the ingredients are all seasonal and organic.

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein

This Newport Beach-based superfood brand makes delicious vegan protein powders and bars that contain only organic vegan ingredients (fruits, vegetables and plant derived protein sources from ingredients like peas and quinoa). Their products contain zero fillers or unrecognizable ingredients and even their chocolate peanut butter protein - which tastes like liquid peanut butter when mixed with 1 cup almond milk and 1 frozen banana - still contains all your daily greens from sources like wheatgrass, spirulina, barley grass, spinach and more.

Go Macro Protein Pleasure Bars

Most nutrition bars marketed as "healthy" contain too many unhealthy ingredients like soy protein isolate and other unpronounceable ingredients that are actually chemicals and have been linked to cancer. Or, they are just glorified candy bars with 15-20 grams of sugar. The Go Macro protein bar line is great because the ingredients are all organic and vegan, containing at most 14 grams of sugar and zero ingredients you can't pronounce. The flavors are all delicious (think peanut butter chocolate, banana almond butter and cashew caramel). Each bar also contains 11 grams of protein that will keep you fuller longer and energized all day. I keep these in my bag and reach for one when I am on the go to keep me fueled between meals.

Teaonic Herbal Tea Tonics

I am super into tonics and tinctures right now because when plants act as medicine, you rarely have to reach for the over-the-counter variety. I am so excited that brands like Teaonic are packaging these tonics and potions to be readily available at supermarkets and cafes (I discovered this brand at LA's Farmshop). Their teas all have clever names like "I love my liver" or "I love my brain" which consequently improve the functions of those organs in your body. All of the ingredients are certified USDA organic and are made with herbal plants that can be enjoyed any time of day (unlike caffeinated beverages that I wouldn't recommend after 3 pm).
